SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR YOUR SHIH TZU

I've listed basic supplies that you will need when having your shih tzu. It is always better to be prepared before bringing your shih tzu home to keep your furbaby happy, healthy and contented.

1. Dog Food

  • choose a quality dog food and make sure to feed your shih tzu a well- balanced diet.
2. Dog Bowl
  • I prefer using a stainless dog bowl as it doesn't contribute on staining my shih tzu's face. I've read somewhere that plastic bowls are quite terrible for shih tzus as they can leak dyes into food and water causing staining to your beloved shih tzu's facial hair.
3. Water Bottle
  • It is advisable to use a water bottle for your shih tzu as it prevents futher staining of your furbaby's facial hair. When using bowls, shih tzu's face become constantly wet which contributes to staining.
4. Dog Crate
  • some people use crate to house train their dogs
5. Dog Harness and Dog Leash
  • useful when walking your shih tzus
6. Grooming Supplies
  • Shih tzus hair grows long so they need constant grooming and everyday brushing to minimize matted hair.
7. Dog Treats
  • Dog treats can also be useful when training your dogs and for rewarding them with their good behavior.
  • Just be sure to use non-greasy and healthy treats.
  • Avoid treats with too much sugar as they can do more harm than good.
8. Clean Water
  • I prefer using distilled water for my shih tzu as tap water may contain chlorine which is harmful.
  • It is also suggested to use distilled water to minimize shih tzu's tear stains.

Please comment below if you want to add something so I can learn from you too.. xoxo

Vaccination Guide for Puppies and Dogs

Puppies (under 1 year of age) are susceptible to parvo virus and other canine diseases. As the saying goes, "Prevention is better than cure".

This is the list that i follow for my dog's vaccination:

  • 3 weeks old --  Deworming
  • 5 weeks old --  Deworming
  • 6 weeks old --  Vaccination (DHPP (vaccines for distemper, adenovirus [hepatitis],                 parainfluenza, and parvovirus)
  • 8 weeks old --  Deworming
  • 9 weeks old --  Vaccination (DHPP (vaccines for distemper, adenovirus [hepatitis], parainfluenza, and parvovirus)
  • 12 weeks old -- Vaccination (DHPP (vaccines for distemper, adenovirus [hepatitis], parainfluenza, and parvovirus)
  • 17 weeks old -- Antirabies Vaccination + Heartworm Prevention

Annually -- Antirabies vaccination (as required by law)
      Every three months -- Deworming
      Monthly-- Heartworm Prevention
It is also recommended that dogs be vaccinated with DHPP every three years.

As a responsible furparent, it is a must that we give our dogs proper care and vaccination is one of them. Your dog will lavish you with lifelong love in return.

All about Shih tzu

SHIH TZU

  • originally bred for royalty in China
  • is believed to have been bred by Tibetan lamas to be a tiny replica of a lion
mommy do i look like a lion?? :)

  • companion dogs
  • called Chrysanthemum dogs because of the way their hair grows up from the nose and around the face in all directions.
little munchkin ^-^

Personality and Temperament:

  • can make a great companion for a senior
  • tend to like dogs and children
  • playful and sometimes mischievous

  • some develop separation anxiety due to lack of training
  • can be trained basic commands and tricks
  • some can be picky eaters

Health:

Shih tzus are prone to certain health conditions like:

  • Allergies  (food, contact allergies and inhalant allergies)

  • Canine Hip Dysplasia-- abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints.
  • Eye Problems-- shih tzus are prone to eye problems due to their large eyes and the hairs which grow from the nose and around the face.some develop tear stains and can lead to infection if not treated properly.
  • Ear Infections-- The long ears of the Shih Tzu ensure a moist and warm environment which is perfect for causing ear infections from bacteria, yeast, fungus and other parasites. Proper grooming is neccessary.
  • Umbilical Hernia--  is a small opening in the abdominal wall allowing the possibility of contents from the abdomen to protrude.

Shih tzus are very wonderful family pet. They are always happy and ready to greet you when you come home from school or a hard days work. They always enjoy human companion and are always ready to cheer your gloomy days :).
